Subject Length1 semester
Description1.What are atoms and what information can we learn about them using the periodic table?
2.How do atoms combine and how does this influence their properties and the materials they make?
3.How are titrations used to determine the concentration of acids and bases?
4.What are Redox reactions and how do these relate to the production of galvanic cells?

In chemistry you will learn the fundamental aspects of chemistry and apply them to everyday situations. Students will begin by exploring the atom; their structure, their arrangement, how and why they are arranged in the periodic table, how they combine to form compounds and how their bonds change the properties and materials they make. Students then explore the world of reactions including; acid-base, redox, polymerisation, precipitation, combustion and endothermic and exothermic reactions.
Subject OutcomesStudents will develop practical skills including using inquiry skills to design, conduct, evaluate and communicate findings from investigations. This course will develop student’s problem-solving skills and their ability to apply knowledge in order to understand the world around them.
Advice To StudentsStudents who want to do Stage 2 Chemistry will need to also enrol in Chemistry 2.
Assumed KnowledgeIt is essential that students will have successfully completed year 10 science. This ensures that the students have the necessary background to be successful at this subject.
Additional InformationStudents must successfully completed Chemistry 1 to continue with Chemistry 2.
